Yesterday morning I did something a lof of people dread...I ran a 5K race. One thing that is a constant I hear from others is that they would never be able to run a mile, let alone a full 5K (3.1 miles). Well I am hear to tell you that you absolutely can!
First some background. I was a track sprinter for many years throughout high school and college while running cross country in the off seasons to keep myself in shape. One thing I have learned from all my years of running is that it is not easy! It will push you to your limits some days, your legs will hurt and your mind is constantly telling yourself to stop.
When I started my fitness journey back up in May I thought the same thing. I ran for all those years so I am going to stick with weight lifting this time. I have honestly learned from there that weight lifting for me is great but my body deep down loves to run as well. When I went on my first 3 mile run since losing some weight and being active again I learned my endurance was greater than I expected! All those lifting sessions of pushing myself actually built up some endurance and I surprised myself so much with how well I was able to run!
On on top of that, the mental side of running has made a major impact on me. Telling myself I can do this and then actually doing it has been a huge boost. When you run your body releases endorphins. Those endorphins can greatly increase your moods and helps suppress any self doubt, anxiety and etc you may be feeling!
Moral of the story, if you want to go out and try running along your journey, definitely go out and try it. Plug in some headphones and music you love and just go for it! You may surprise yourself.
